Luna’s Orchard

This time of the year snow covers everything. Today is very cold, around -20C, even if there’s a bright sunlight outside. During winter I enjoy colouring pages that make me think of warmer days. This one comes from Maria Trolle’s Book LUNA.

There’s a feeling of springtime in this illustration, full of flowers blooming and rabbits or hares jumping around. The figure in the middle, with a crescent in her front, seems to be part of that group. Maybe a Wild Woman, she reminds me of the tales from the book “Women that run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype“, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés.

The animals are another reference to Spring. Rabbits are usually associated with Easter and rebirth. Hares are old symbols of abundance and fertility, often represented in Art in connection with Magic, Women and the Moon.

It was so fun to colour this page! I used two different Derwent pencils Sets: Coloursoft and Procolour. I really like to work with those two together, because they complement each other.

Coloursoft is smooth and perfect for larger areas while Procolour has a harder core that is excellent for details. Procolour also layers beautifully, adding shadows and volume. Both sets interact with no problem, they blend well and together create lovely transitions between tones.
