Those pencils have great resistance to light, a vast choice of colours, are easy to replace and are fantastic to layer and blend. If your layers are light, you may add several colours, creating new tonalities with deepness and interest. Once you buy the set, it’s easy to add or replace pencils because they’re available in many stores and easy to find. You can start with a small set and just add on. I really enjoy working with Polychromos, probably the coloured pencils I used most often.

Luminance by Caran D’Ache

Luminance pencils are Swiss made, defined as permanent for their high resistance to light. Those pencils are an extravaganza and a different experience when compared to other pencils. Colours are rich and pigments are saturated, creamy core and great capacity of coverage. Water resistant, with intense tonalities.

All about it reflects quality, even the box set – pencils in trays look like colourful jewels.

Once you have the first set, it’s easy to find replacements and add colours, they are available in several stores, including online.

Derwent Lightfast

Derwent Lightfast are the only coloured pencils that I know that offer a comparable experience as Luminance. Both are smooth, very easy to blend and have rich, pigmented colours that offer great coverage. However, they are not the same: Derwent’s barrel is larger, core’s texture is smooth but not buttery and available palette is different. The capacity of blending and creating new colours is just amazing. I blended white and magenta to create pink and colours just mix effortlessly. Easy to find replacements once you get the set. Great quality, smart choice for Artist’s coloured pencils. Five Stars.

Pablo Coloured Pencils by Caran D’Ache

Pablo 120 Permanent Colour Pencils Gift Set Wood Box

Caran D’Ache Pablo are great pencils with a large game of tonalities. The 120 set has one of my favourite palletes, I love the colour choices. Those are quality pencils that offer light resistance and great pigmentation. They are easy to blend and layer. However, there’s a learning curve with Pablo pencils: they need many light layers to show the beautiful deep colours, and that takes patience. If you’re looking for one layer results, maybe they are not for you. If you enjoy working with many layers, they really deliver and create amazing tonalities and lovely results.

Derwent Coloursoft

Derwent Coloursoft are between my favourite pencils. They have a slightly larger barrel, core is very smooth and velvety, almost chalky. I absolutely love those pencils to cover larger areas, because they lay down so evenly and I can change tones, creating lovely gradients. I often use Derwent Coloursoft for backgrounds as well. They are not the best choice for small detail or line work, because they are so soft. I enjoy using Coloursoft and Procolour together, they complement each other perfectly. I use this set so much, I’ve already replaced many pencils. Derwent products are easy to find in stores and online, that’s great because my set is always complete.

Derwent Inktense

Derwent Inktense are ink pencils activated by water. They are different than watercolours, after using water once they dry quickly and permanently. This allows using layers, because colours can be placed next or on top of each other, no colour bleeding. Bright and rich colours, beautiful. Colouring and drawing with Derwent Intense is a fun experience!

Derwent Procolour have a harder core, still soft but consistent. Beautiful colours, great coverage, quality coloured pencils produced in England by Derwent. Procolour pencils will keep the point and don’t dust. Perfect for artistic drawing and colouring smaller areas, lines and details. I enjoy using Coloursoft and Procolour together, they complement each other perfectly. Great pencils.
